Sony Biotechnology’s website is a critical gateway for scientists worldwide, but its legacy platform had become a bottleneck in the discovery process. As the site architecture evolved over time, product findability had become more challenging and failed to reflect the brand’s technological sophistication.
Site search functionality prioritized products in the online store, often burying the technical documentation and research resources scientists rely on to make informed decisions.
Recognizing these challenges, Sony engaged D2 Creative to reengineer the experience and build a scalable, research-forward platform aligned with its global growth goals.
The technical and structural hurdles necessitated a move away from anecdotal design toward a comprehensive, research-backed strategy focused on user experience. Our methodology utilized a suite of sophisticated data-gathering tools to ensure that the interface responded directly to the behaviors and pain points of users. Heatmapping identified exactly where user attention was focused and where brand engagement stalled. Stakeholder interviews aligned the digital experience with Sony’s core business objectives and identified competitive threats. User journey recordings observed real-time navigation to pinpoint specific moments of frustration or abandonment.
These findings reshaped the information architecture. When data revealed users were ignoring a key navigational element, we introduced dynamic sub-navigation to keep critical resources visible while exploring complex instrument specifications. By analyzing click paths and page takeaways, we consolidated pages into a unified catalog experience, removing friction between research and action.
The new platform is built on Edge Delivery Services (also referred to as Adobe Experience Manager), enabling a modern, high-engagement scrolling homepage. Static hero images were replaced with a narrative-driven experience highlighting instruments, applications, and news, anchored by a clear mission.
And, to reinforce global brand governance, D2 implemented strict UI standards, deliberately separating the Sony and Sony Biotechnology logos to preserve the biotech division’s distinct identity.
By integrating strategy, creative, and technology, D2 Creative delivered a unified, scalable platform designed to evolve with changing markets, advancing technology, and the needs of scientists worldwide.
The transformation of the Sony Biotechnology site has redefined how the brand connects with the global scientific community. By drawing from strategic benchmarks, scientists can now reach specific instruments and reagents faster and find relevant and helpful information easier.
